We already explored Toraja on our own for two days, but Toraja is SO much better with a guide. There are also many benefits to having a guide in Toraja as they can take you to see a local funeral ceremony and they can also bring you to someone's house who is living with a dead relative. From the very beginning of our day, we were amazed at how much better it was to explore with a guide! Natalia stopped by some rice farmers to show us how they harvest rice and she showed us how she used to make a flute out of the rice plant when she was a child. It was so interesting to learn about! From there we continued on to our first stop: the Bolu Buffalo Market in Toraja. It's the largest Buffalo market in South East Asia. Natalia explained all about the different buffaloes and how their bought at the market with cash. The most expensive buffalo at market that day was $20,000 USD!!! We also saw where they sell the chickens and pigs. Then we walked next door to the local food market. The first thing we saw were plastic gas tanks full of palm wine! We bought a snack and then we were able to try the wine in Toraja! We also tried deppa torri which tasted good but looked very interesting! Natalia also got us some interesting Indonesian fruit to try! After the market we drove to our next location which was supposed to be a cave, however there was a legal cock fight going on! Our guide explained how cock fighting is illegal, but as it's related to the funerals in Toraja, they sometimes have special permission from the government to have one. We were able to get closer to see all the people there as well as the special built stage. It was another really unique experience that we never would've seen without a guide! After we saw the cock fight, we headed down the most gorgeous green path to the Lombok Parinding cave grave. It was one of the coolest cave graves we saw in Toraja! Natalia gave us so much great information about the different coffins and burials in Toraja. Next we stopped by a supermarket in Rantepao Toraja to buy some donations for the family we were going to visit who was living with their deceased grandmother. We met with the grandmother's daughter-in-law who happily took us up into the Tongkonan. We were introduced to Grandma and told she had been living there for over 2 years now. We were also joined by her son which was nice to hear his perspective on having people visit his mother. Day 2 we were with Meyske as our guide. On the way to the funeral ceremony (next video!) we stopped by a modern grave to learn about the 5 different types of graves in Toraja. Next we went to the King's Stone Grave where we learned about how they make the stone graves and we were even able to climb up to the opening of one as the men were working on it. After that Meyske took us to Tampang Allo - another cave grave where we got to learn more about Tau Tau. Our last stop of the day was a baby grave tree.
