Bettongs can turn over a whopping 3 tonnes of soil in one year, playing a critical role in plant and ecosystem regeneration. Once found extensively across southern and central Australia, habitat loss and predators drove these tiny diggers to local extinction from the Northern Territory over 60 years ago.
