s02e67 A lot of people have asked about the current directions in Moreton bay on various fishing forums that I visited over the years. I don’t blame them, it can be confusing. I have learned which way to expect the current to run in places I have visited but I never had a picture of how things interacted to make it the way it is. The CSIRO has done some research that makes the ebb and flow of the tides easy to understand, at least in the northern part of Moreton Bay. The CSIRO has produced several videos from their research that shows the movement of water, and its associated salinity and temperature properties, due to tidal flows. The tidal flows themselves are, of course, a result of the solar and lunar cycles. I have only included a very small segment and slowed it down to give a little more time to see the currents. You should visit the CSIRO site to see the full videos because there is a lot that can be learned from them. I found the animations done by the CSIRO gave me the ability to understand how the water flows in and out of northern Moreton Bay which in turn allows me to predict the current direction in areas I have never visited before. Knowing the temperature and salinity distribution is another useful data point to have particularly for targeting some of the pelagic species.
