62 Document 3 p. 77 Our house is burning and we are looking elsewhere. Welcome to Présages, the podcast that questions the state of our world, the risks of the collapse of our industrial civilization and the ways to prepare to live differently. I am Alexia Soyeux and today we are going to talk about youth. For several months, a mobilization of young people on environmental issues has emerged in France, thus joining the global movement. High school students, college students see the future slip away before their eyes. They choose to strike, to organize themselves in collectives, to write columns. They occupy public space so that inaction ceases in the face of the destruction of life, climate change and rising inequalities [...] The word degrowth, we have often been told that it is very ideological and suddenly it shows that there is perhaps a lack of reflexivity in relation to what we are taught and which is also ideological [...] You say in the manifesto that you are convinced that this dark picture is not inevitable, where do you see the hope for change? Basically there are different degrees and it can be more or less worse already, we can already make it less worse, it is still infinitely more motivating to say to ourselves that it is not inevitable. a phase transition, it happens very very quickly. And I think there is also the fact that... we talk about... I think that at that point in the text we talk a lot about economic systems, about overconsumption no doubt, I think there is also the idea that we are growing up, well in this economic system we grew up in it and we have the impression that it is the only viable hypothesis, well in any case it is a bit what we are sold and that it is spreading throughout the world and, in fact, the idea was also to say that we can build something else if we want to, I think that... well the idea is not to say we will avoid global warming if we start to change the way we act because no global warming has already started, we are not going to go back but on the other hand the idea was above all to say that we can, we can build something else. And would you say that you aspire to a form of degrowth or slowdown? Well, it's difficult to answer for everyone, but personally for me, yes. This is the idea that it is not inevitable and that however we are not going to go back, that's really it, it is to say, uh, we are aware that the whole current economic system has also brought a lot of improvements and the idea is not to spit on that, it is to say we have a step back from what happened, an understanding of what happened to be able to say well what do we want to keep and what are we... what are we ready to give up on and so suddenly that is for me the question of the slowdown is to say well we have acquired a lot of things, the infrastructures of our country are built finally lots of things like that, we have acquired food security and suddenly why always want to go further, uh, why want to persist in creating activities which are ultimately harmful to natural resources and which do not bring us more well-being that is why want to work ten hours a day to do something ultimately which is not necessarily very useful. What is said exactly in the text is that the society we want is not a harder, sadder society, of hardships, it is a more serene, more pleasant society, of chosen slowdown. Indeed, the slowdown of the destruction caused by our economic model is not incompatible with human well-being, on the contrary, so we prefer to use the word slowdown than decline and slowdown of the destruction caused by our model. Then to see what that means in terms of GDP, finally, finally for me, it doesn't matter. When you launched the manifesto, which was initiated rather by the grandes écoles, did you have the impression that there were recalcitrants, people, students, who were not, who were not sensitive to these subjects who were for, finally who had other priorities? So there are still some students who are not too sensitive to that. They remain quite marginal. The slightly more divisive point, however, was the degree of commitment. That's a subject of debate, to what extent we should oppose the current system and model and to what extent we should. uh, make concessions on it, modify it, without actually opposing it completely.
