DAY 3 (20 Jan): Route taken : Bhagalpur-Purnia-Siliguri-Madarihat (387 kms) After struggling with jams in the stretch leading up to Bhagalpur, we were worried about crossing the 4.7 km long Vikramshila Setu as the bridge was prone to jams. Google traffic was showing that the bridge was clear and within half an hour of moving out of the hotel we had cleared the bridge. Crossing some towns near Bihar-Bengal border was a pain as the divider was occupied by hawkers.We crossed into Bengal around 10:00 am and had our breakfast(Puri with daal) in a BP family restaurant. Crossing Siliguri took almost 2 hours due to blockade because of VIP movement. After crossing Siliguri the landscape changed and the drive became very pleasant. The highway passing through a dense forest was very scenic. The ghat roads ahead of the forest area added to the charm of the ride. After crossing Coronation bridge we had our lunch at Oodlabari. I had planned to drive to Bongaigaon in Assam but the mess at Siliguri has reduced my average speed. So I decided to end my day in Madarihat. I had shortlisted Babusona Homestay in Madarihat as it had very good google reviews. The homestay provides clean spacious rooms at a very economical price. We crashed in our beds by 9:00 pm planning to hit the road on the next day by 5:00 am. The entire tour lasted for 14 days in which we covered the following destinations of Meghalaya:- 1) Shillong - Capital of Meghalaya 2) Shnongpdeng village - A small settlement in East Khasi hills on the banks of UMNGOT river. 3) Dawki - Situated on India-Bangladesh border 4) Mawlynnong village which is famous for being Asia’s cleanest village. 5) Cherrapunji also known as Shora. To reach Meghalaya we had to drive through 6 Indian states namely Orissa,Jharkhand,Bihar, WestBengal and Assam. I did this tour in January which is considered as off season for tourism in Meghalaya.
