Arne Slot's Liverpool approach draws inspiration from a coaching legend long before Klopp.

Arne Slot's Liverpool approach draws inspiration from a coaching legend long before Klopp. It’s tempting to label Arne Slot as the next Jurgen Klopp due to his smooth transition as Liverpool’s new manager. Or to compare him to the Dutch version of Pep Guardiola, given his admiration for the Manchester City boss’s style. However, Slot's real inspiration comes from closer to home in the Netherlands. Slot has long been a fan of Johan Cruyff’s philosophy, particularly the concept of Total Football. Though the term is often associated with Rinus Michels, it was Cruyff who brought it to prominence in Dutch football during the 1970s, when the national team reached two consecutive World Cup finals in 1974 and 1978. Slot has introduced this same footballing style at Liverpool, bringing it across from his time at Feyenoord. While the Premier League has seen ten Dutch coaches before him, none have won the league, though they have secured FA Cups and a Carabao Cup. Former Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk has praised Slot for his boldness in embracing attacking football, a style that van Marwijk himself felt was too risky when he led the Netherlands to the 2010 World Cup Final. “Everyone in The Netherlands is rooting for Slot because he brings back the excitement of Johan Cruyff,” van Marwijk said. “Most managers play it safe at a new club, but Slot has shown courage. He knows you have to establish your system from the very start.” Van Marwijk notes that while it’s too early to fully judge Liverpool under Slot, they’ve looked brilliant so far. Slot’s aggressive approach, pressing high and playing from the back, is already apparent. A key principle Slot has adopted from Cruyff is the use of triangles on the pitch: when player A passes to player B, player C is already moving into space to receive the next pass. Another hallmark of his aggressive style is having his players step in front of their markers to intercept passes. Ryan Gravenberch’s transformation is a prime example. Slot spent a week with him in pre-season, teaching him how to read the game in a deep-lying midfield role. Against Manchester United, Gravenberch made 12 interceptions, including one that led to Liverpool’s opening goal. Slot’s celebrations after that goal showed his satisfaction with their work on the training ground. Slot is also encouraging Virgil van Dijk to push forward and press the opposition midfielders. Van Marwijk has pointed out that the players are clearly buying into Slot’s ideas, as seen in their energetic performances. “He’s injecting energy into this Liverpool team,” he said. “You can see Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz playing with intensity. The whole squad is embracing Slot’s philosophy.” Dutch legend Marco van Basten is equally impressed, stating, “I’m very taken with what Arne Slot has achieved so far in England. He’s explained his football ideas to me, and I find him to be a highly intelligent and calm coach.” It’s no wonder that in the Netherlands, many are eager for Slot to succeed at Liverpool by embracing Cruyff’s footballing legacy.
