New York cracks down on "ghost" license plates with new law

A new law that took effect Sept. 1 in New York state aims to combat the use of so-called “ghost” license plates—obscured or altered plates that allow drivers to evade tolls and red-light camera tickets. The law makes it illegal to buy or sell license plate covers that obscure numbers or letters, and penalties for their use have increased by 500%. Drivers caught using these covers could face maximum fines of up to $500, with repeat offenders risking suspension of their licenses.
