How To Change The Column Width (3 Ways) In Excel Explained - Change Column Width To Exact Number

In this video we discuss 3 ways to change the column width in an excel spreadsheet, by clicking and dragging, or by formatting the column width to an exact measurement or autofitting the width to match the text width Transcript/notes Let’s say that you want to change the column width for certain columns in an excel spreadsheet, and we will use this one as an example. There are 2 main ways to do this. The first way is to click and drag. For instance, if we want to widen column A to include all of the text in all of the cells, we go up to the dividing line between column A and B, and you see the cursor change to a line with 2 outgoing arrows, we simply click and drag to the right to widen the cells in column A. And we can do the same to shorten column B, again, click and drag. Now for the 2nd way. To use this method, make sure you are on the home tab at the top of the spreadsheet. Next, you left click on the column you want to change the width of, then, you go over to the format icon above the cells section at the top of the spreadsheet, and left click on it. A drop down box will appear, and we want to go down to column width and left click on it. Now, a pop up box will appear, where you can type in the width that you want the column to be. I am going to type in 19, then we hit the enter key, and the column has widened. Two notes about using this formatting process for cell width. First, you can highlight all of the columns you want to change the width of by left clicking on the first column you want to change, and drag across to the last column you want changed as you see here, then go to format, and go down and click on auto fit and excel will automatically change the width of the cells. Second, you can highlight all of the columns you want to change the width of, as you see here, then go to format, and go down and click on column width, and type in the width you want, and excel will change the width of all of the highlighted columns to the width you want, this is if you want the same width for each of the columns.
