'Twas Brillig - Dirty Old Man ...1967

‘Twas Brillig – Dirty Old Man …1966 Please bear with me on this one, this group has a crazy history. ‘Twas Brillig (The Electras) was a psychedelic/rock band that formed in 1962 in Ely, Minnesota USA as the Electras. … Now, the band released the song “Dirty Old Man” multiple times under both band names, “The Electras” and ‘Twas Brillig… By 1966 the Electras had hooked up with Warren Kendrick who was a songwriter and record producer at Dove Recording Studio. He also was the owner of his own record label, Scotty Records which Kendrick signed the band too. Kendrick wrote The Electras debut single, "Bout My Love", which was released in 1966 and charted regionally at #39. Their follow-up, "This Week's Children", propelled to #12 on the charts localy in Minneapolis. It was the Electras' third single, "Dirty Old Man", that proved to be their biggest hit, as the band enjoyed 17 weeks with the record charting at number one regionally and selling 6,000 copies. In the fall of 1966, Warren Kendrick finally secured a distribution contract with Columbia Records to release "Dirty Old Man" with "This Week's Children" as its B-side. However, copies of the single, which were already issued on the Columbia Records subsidiary Date Records, were recalled as it was discovered that the name, The Electras, was copyrighted by another group named The Electras who released an album in 1961, by the way that band of Electras included future Massachusetts Senator, and Secretary of State, John Kerry. Without the band's input, Kendrick then changed the bands name to 'Twas Brillig, and re-released "Dirty Old Man" in February 1967. A short time later, Tim Elfving, lead vocalist for the band was drafted for service in Vietnam which consequently resulted in the group losing advertising support from Columbia. The band then changed their name back to The Electras and then recorded two more singles but could not replicate their past successes and disbanded. As for the band name being already being under copywrite, I'm not sure if anything ever came from it.....
