Ki Thied ka Lawei (Roots of Sustainability)

A documentary on the formation of Root bridges, Meghalaya The ‘root bridges’ of Meghalaya today attract tourists from all over the world. Tourists flock to these sites throughout the year to admire nature’s extravagance. Apart from the attraction, what are the underlying values and principles that nature has to offer us human beings? In Shiliang Jashar, a village 61 kms away from Shillong, Meghalaya; a bridge made out of eco-friendly materials is built every year since 1988. This prevailing culture provides a glimpse into the process of growing bridges (Jingkieng Jri) from the Diengjri (strangler fig) resulting in the spectacular Root Bridges evident all across the valleys of Khasi-Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya. This practice which has endured through time is unbending, abiding by age old prescriptions tabulated on values exemplified to the vicinities, stretching the durability and sustainability where principles and values precedes the product. This documentary film swirls innovation and the collective labour to never profligate resources. It portrays values, ethics and behavioural characteristics towards a more sustainable world for the generations to come.
