The 2017 PC-11 specification released by the American Petroleum Institute (API) contained two separate specs - CK4 and FA4. While the two share similar improvements over the previous CJ-4 Diesel engine lubricant specification, CK-4 oils are backward compatible while FA-4 oils were designed for use in modern engines (2017 and onward). In this video we discuss the differences between the two, and give general advice on how a truck or bus fleet might make a choice between them, taking into account viscosity grade, HTHS, fleet age, fleet mix, fleet requirements (inc reefers and APUs), and fuel economy benefits. Here at Lubrication Expert we take a first-principles approach to lubricants and greases; helping industry understand lubrication technology and pushing the limits of what is possible.
