Simple Province Life | Traditional Party & Foraging Wild Herbs & Fruits | Natonin, Mt. Province 🇵🇭

Ammay we ag akéw yu! (Good day everyone) Hello friends! 💚 The agricultural areas in Natonin are carved on the mountain slopes. They are the rice terraces that are irrigated by streams flowing down the mountain. Surrounding this area are the thick forests that covers majority of Natonin. Not so far away from our rice farming community, there is a forested area called Tufuy. This is where we keep livestocks and where most fruit-bearing trees are planted. Today, we will attend a house blessing in the forest and forage for wild herbs and fruits. Join me on this adventure, as we explore the wildpath! Around an hour from Poblacion, you will reach this place. This is Tufuy. Only few people live around here. This house is on a small clearing surrounded by towering trees. Today, we came here for the house blessing ceremony. Before the ceremony, we went to the forest to gather some wild herbs and fruits. A year ealier, we visited just in time for the rambutan and lemon season. This is fruit tree that gives a hairy fruit with white juicy flesh. It is a very delicious fruit with sweet and sometimes sour taste. The goats went with us to the forest and enjoyed the fruit as well. Upon entering the forest, I felt engulfed by the wildnerness with the various animal calls, earthy fresh smell, and the seemingly endless leaves everywhere. I felt completely immersed in nature. It pulled my focus back to my senses , to the present, away from my thoughts. This is relaxing for me, to feel the moment as it is. After going to the forest, we harvested the large lemons. These lemons cannot support their fruit. The main plant is small and bears numerous large fruits that sags to the ground. This year, we were too early as the rambutan fruits are still unripe. We harvested the dragon fruits instead. Dragon fruits are recently introduced to our area. It is a red fleshy sweet fruit from a cactus plant. It derives its name from its leathery bright red skin that resembles a dragon. Along the way, we harvested wild bitter guord that grows in abundance here. As the name implies, it is indeed bitter. This wild variety is even more bitter than the the store bought ones. We usually boil it with native chicken or just boil it on its own. We also foraged wild ferns called pa'pa o. Pa' pao can be lightly stirfried. Others eat it like a salad. We harvested calamansi as well, a small citrus fruit which is a staple in every filipino home. The mullberries were also ripe this time. It was such a delight picking its black ripe berries that stained my fingers. House blessing ceremony is done when a new home is built to invoke God's presence and protection over the home and its occupants. It is also an opportunity for family and the community to gather and celebrate the joyful event and give thanks to the blessing. A small party was organized with the help of some locals living nearby. We also invited some friends and relatives from other barangays to join us. During parties, we usually butcher a cow or pigs and we serve it with rice, pancit noodles and sometimes with sweet desert. Everyone is invited. Whoever hears about the party is welcome to join. Everyone is involved during the preparation. Usually, the women prepare the ingredients and the men prepare the meat and do the cooking. We made use of our traditional party dish. Instead of using only paper plates and plastic cups, we also used banana bark and bamboo cups to reduce plastic waste. It was fun It reminded me of my childhood plus it is also an eco-friendly option. During the party, we did the traditional dance, the elders shared words of wisdom, and we ate and drank until it was night fall.
