R211S Staten Island Railway: The Inaugural Run of Service

Seen here is a ride on the inaugural run of the R211S, running along the Staten Island Railway. On October 8, 2024, it starts a new era for Staten Island as the R211S has finally entered service after a long delay of testing and maintenance of operations being carried along the line. In this video, I managed to make the event, but I ended up getting there a bit late due to delays for me, so I ended up missing it coming into the station and just started riding it along the way. The R211S are the first subway cars for Staten Island, as it is going to be replacing the aging R44s, since the New York City Transit were retired back in 2010, these R211S will be replacing the rest of the R44s out in Staten Island. The technology is a lot different compared to the R211A and R211T since these R211S will be in Staten Island, these trains are equipped with ATC technology, of which ATC stands for Automatic Train Controls, meaning there’s a different signal being used out there compared to NYCT subways have, in this case, it’s similar to CBTC but the signal system out there has pulse cab signaling installed. During this ride, there were a lot of kids ditching school for this event, and they were causing a of ruckus on the ride, likely because it’s the first day it’s in service, but they shouldn’t mess around just because it’s in service the first day. I moved around a bit to get a better view from the side along the way, of which I did, however during the ride, we almost went into emergency due to signaling issues on the ride, but luckily it didn’t go out of service. This ride would be better if those foamers didn’t came along and almost ruined the ride along the way. But at least I enjoyed every moment of it along the way. In the end, it would make another trip out, but it almost had problems before leaving the station due to a bag being caught at the door of the train , and the train operators didn’t know how to use the train yet, even though they had a lot of training on there, but they could still get more training from it than just waiting to depart the station before going to where ever they have to make their intervals from. But the ride and the R211S itself, it was fun to ride it since it’s the first time it went into service, and soon, it’ll be phasing the R44s from there, even though the R46s are being replaced by the R211As and the R211Ts, but those R44s are seeing its wits end after being around for more than 50 years in service.
