If you were to boil down 2019 into one word, it would probably be "uncertainty." From government shutdowns and trade wars to money market volatility and signs of a slowing economy, we've all had to re-learn what it means to live with uncertainty. To its credit, the Federal Open Markets Committee (FOMC) appears to have calmed the market's nerves somewhat with a series of "mid-cycle adjustments," starting with a 25 basis point cut at the July meeting. Was this enough to calm the waters and keep the economy out of a recession, or was it a foreshadow of trouble ahead? And if the economy were to further deteriorate, does the FOMC have enough tools at its disposal to respond? Constance Hunter, KPMG Chief Economist and President of the National Association for Business Economics (NABE), joined us at the Atlanta Fed to discuss these questions and more in her 2020 Economic Outlook.
