World's GREATEST Drumkit Restoration Short Film - A Love Letter to Rogers Drums

BACKSTORY: By a stroke of luck I picked up (read: found) this dirty, pitted 1977 Rogers USA “Big R” series drum set. I figured a nice summer project would be to restore the kit to a semblance of its former glory and document it. It was about time I got a new set anyway, and I didn’t want anything “factory new.” This was perfect. I knew Rogers was an old, American drum brand that rather fell off the radar in the stead of the bloated marketing push of the Asian behemoths of the 1980s; i.e. Tama, Pearl and Yamaha. (Those kits was what you saw on MTV, or in concert or in magazines, with the occasional Ludwig, Sonor, Gretch or Slingerland appearance.) But in deconstructing, cleaning and rebuilding these Rogers, the old company won my heart. These drums were incredibly well engineered and ahead of their time in terms of design, quality and craftsmanship. (I didn’t like blue drums either, but there’s something about this “Pacific Blue” hue that screams!) Also, opting for Remo "white dot” drumheads went against prior instincts, but I’m glad I sought those out. They look great and sound way better than expected. They work as the single heads on “concert toms”—something else lost to the '70s but in desperate need of a comeback. I quickly discovered that Rogers Drums has a dedicated, cult following, mostly guys 55+. There’s something touching about an age-old allegiance to a vintage now-off-the-radar brand. It’s their little secret, to which I've been endowed. (These guys also help me score some key missing parts, and I’m quite grateful!) I’d wager it’s time that younger players took a larger interest in vintage kits and the brands of yore! Through restoration, I gained a deeper understanding of ideas that were jettisoned by drum makers over time, and concepts implemented decades ago that remain common to every kit. This restoration was completed between August and September 2020, shooting video on my trusty iPhone 11 Pro, and staging fun shots or angles when inspiration struck. A conscious goal was to not “talk” over any of this, but to let the frames do the instructing. I tried to feature all tools and branded products - solvents, dry-film lubricants, steel wool, etc., when I could. The final edit (done in Videopad) is set over an original piece of music, entitled “George 2k”: a descending piano arpeggio alternating with a driving Fm6 figure (with a phased Wurlitzer 200A electric piano and a Young Chang studio upright making a cameo) The "Casio" rhythm track allowed me to reserve the “real drums” for the end flourish; the finale: The restored kit was staged next to my fireplace for the “live test”—a crafted rhythmic figure over the tune’s chordal stabs, loudly featuring each drum (and the subject drummer). How’s that for a flex! Thanks for watching. Subscribe to my channel!
