Boxing's First Filipino Olympic Gold Medalist is from England? | Tom Welland

Leo Antell captures the story of Tom Welland, an amateur boxer who’s embarking on a journey to become the first Filipino Olympic gold medalist in boxing. Tom 3 weeks out from his big move to the Philippines when we started filming. Everything he did was gearing up to him going out there to prove himself as an elite amateur boxer, and potentially a future olympian. Tom believes that England Boxing should’ve chosen him, and that he wasn’t given the opportunity to prove himself as a candidate to represent them on an international level.. The Documentary uncovers how he was able to become part of the Philippines Olympic Squad in response to not being chosen by his home country. He flipped the script on anyone who doubted him. The Philippines have been longing for an Olympic gold medal ever since 1996 when Onyok Velasco returned to his home country with a silver medal.. They believed he was robbed.. Since then, you’ve had so much promising talent coming out of the country, and they’re a powerhouse in boxing, yet they haven’t won a single gold medal in boxing. It's even considered their national sport with the like of Manny Pacquiao becoming a huge symbol of hope for the Filipinos. With all that said, imagine a Brit goes and wins it for them.. I believe this is a really special project, unlike any captured before in amateur boxing! We need the support of the community for this one. This isn’t just a story about a kid pursuing greatness in boxing.. This is about family, this is about a dream and doing whatever it takes to achieve something, making every sacrifice necessary. In under 15 minutes you’re taken on the journey of an 18 year old boy looking to accomplish his goal, leaving everything behind; you see his whole career unfold before you and watch him on a journey to becoming a man. What I can promise is: you will laugh, you’ll feel inspired and you may even shed a tear. It’s got a bit in there for everyone, whether you’re a boxing fan, sports fan or you don’t even like sport. This story is definitely just the start of a very special talent.
