1928. M Reynaldo Hahn (1874-1947) accompanies himself singing Air Du Devin De Village by Jean Jaques Rousseau (from Rousseau's one act French opera "The Village Soothsayer"-first performed in 1752) Columbia record D2022 (fabrique en France). Recorded in 1928. He made quite a lot of these lovely little recordings! They have been described as "elegant" and "charming" --sparkling descriptions. "A student of Jules Massenet, classmate of Maurice Ravel, friend of Marcel Proust, Sarah Bernhardt and Gabriel Fauré, Hahn was a major figure in the Parisian artistic salons at the turn of the century. Renowned for the incomparable charm of his performances at musical evenings, Hahn possessed one of the greatest vocal techniques of his time; his ability to sustain his breath over long phrases."(from Romophone.com) He was and is a much beloved man. His Mélodies and other mountain of works are widely performed to this day. He led an amazing life in so many ways. He joined the military as a young man and throughout his life he would leave whatever he was doing artistically, when needed, to go back to active military duty. Photo is an older Reynaldo Hahn with what looks to be his elderly dachshund sitting on his desk next to him. They look like they were a good pair. Nice.
