Lugu Lake (泸沽湖) is an alpine lake located on the border between Ninglang Yi Autonomous County in Yunnan Province (云南省) and Yanyuan County in Sichuan Province (四川省), China. Situated at an elevation of 2,685 meters, it is the highest lake in Yunnan and is renowned for its unique cultural and natural landscape. The lake spans an area of 48.5 square kilometers, with a maximum depth of 93.5 meters, making it the second deepest lake in China. The lake is famous for its matriarchal Mosuo society, often referred to as the "Kingdom of Women" or "Home of the Matriarchal Tribe." The Mosuo people, a subgroup of the Naxi (纳西族), practice a form of relationship known as "walking marriage," which is a unique aspect of their culture. Lugu Lake is also known for its stunning natural beauty, surrounded by mountains and home to five islands, four peninsulas, fourteen bays, and seventeen beaches. The area around Lugu Lake is inhabited by several ethnic minority groups, including the Mosuo, Norzu, Yi (彝族), and Pumi (普米族), each contributing to the rich cultural tapestry of the region. The lake itself is a significant site for biodiversity, hosting endemic fish species and serving as a habitat for various birds. Lugu Lake's geography is characterized by its horseshoe shape, nestled within the Hengduan Mountain System. It is a natural lake formed by geological faulting and is fed by the Mosuo River, with the Gaizu River as its primary outflow. The lake's clear turquoise waters and the surrounding landscape offer a picturesque setting that attracts tourists seeking both the tranquility of nature and the allure of Mosuo culture.
