Ian Harford has travelled to North Yorkshire to for a double gun pheasant shoot at the renowned Rievaulx estate. Based in North Yorkshire, the highly respected Rivealux shoot is run by Justin Birkett and his family. Ian Harford recently visited for a double gun pheasant day. The first drive, Oxendale, produced spectacular sport with the birds flying high over Guns positioned in the bottom of a conifer-lined valley. The shoot boasts nine valleys in total, each separated by areas of arable land and game crops. A typical wet British day, Ian and his loader Mick did not let the damp stop them from harvesting some magnificent game birds. Dressed in Danish clothing brand Deerhunter, the constant drizzle did not deter Ian from staying out until the end of the final drive. When Justin’s father started the shoot 30 years ago, it only covered 200 acres but it has now grown to span 5,000 acres, becoming one of the most heralded shoots in the UK. Ian found the second drive, Thick Hedge, tricky until he figured about the required lead. Lunch was held outside at the on-site BBQ hut, serving game burgers and sausages. Justin is a real advocate of eating game and serves nothing but. He actively encourages everyone shooting on Rivealux to take home some birds, and everything remaining gets sold to a local game dealer. The last drive – named The Railway – is new for this season. Lucky Ian was located at the right end of the line and found himself in the action for the entire drive. While the picker-uppers collected the last few birds, Ian caught up with fellow Gun Steve who regularly shoots on Rivealux. He is a huge advocate for the shoot and feels that it sets a standard for the sport in the UK. Rievaulx can cater for anything, from small to much larger driven days for both single and double guns.
