(21 Feb 2024) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: ASSOCIATED PRESS Vatican City - 21 February 2024 1. Worker pulling on rope to lift material 2. Workers putting up scaffolding around column of baldachin 3. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Alberto Capitanucci, Engineer, Fabbrica of St. Peter's: "We can say that today the restoration of the baldachin has begun. We are a few days away from the actual start, but we are now close to the Baldachin sky, which is our first level of approach to the very complex provisional work that we saw in the Basilica." 4. Various of workers looking at scaffolding 5. Wide of area behind the baldachin 6. Close of cherubs holding keys and papal crown at top of baldachin 7. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Alberto Capitanucci, Engineer, Fabbrica of St. Peter's: "The restoration will end by the end of November 2024. So it will be ready for renewed splendour for the Jubilee Year. The intervention is a preparatory restoration to a preservation that we hope will last for another 200 years, but in fact the last major restoration was done 250 years ago." 8. Various of workers working on scaffolding 9. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Alberto Capitanucci, Engineer, Fabbrica of St. Peter's: "The object is made up of many materials: the stone, the marble of the bases, four bases of two and a half meters, and the twisted bronze and gold columns, with evidence of the difference between the first third and the second two-thirds as you go up. The entire wooden part that concerns the ceiling of the baldachin with the same entablature around the border. From there we are half-way up the work, because then another third in reality and the part from the ceiling and up. The four large scrolls, the statues on the corners up to the globe and the cross at the top. If we talk about another 15 meters, almost in size." 10. Top of baldachin and inside of cupola of St. Peter’s 11. Various of details on baldachin 12. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Alberto Capitanucci, Engineer, Fabbrica of St. Peter's: "Cleaning is the first of our objectives. As for the metals, bronze and the gold, obviously, after cleaning, there is also, especially for the gold, the verification of its adhesion, of the gold’s condition and of the gold leafing itself. For the stone bases, there are parts on top of each other, incongruous patches that must be eliminated and then returned to cleaning and polishing as we would do on any other stone element." 13. Wide of Via della Conciliazione and St. Peter’s Basilica 17. Top of Cupola on St. Peter’s Basilica 18. Tilt up of St. Peter’s Basilica STORYLINE: The restoration of the monumental baldachin, or canopy, over the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica, began at the Vatican Wednesday. Workers in helmets hoisted metal sheets up the side of the massive structure, as they pieced together scaffolding that will cover the 29-meter-high canopy. The scaffolding is intended to allow all liturgical celebrations to continue throughout the year, without interrupting the restoration work. "The restoration will end by the end of November 2024. So it will be ready for a renewed splendour for the Jubilee Year,” explained engineer Alberto Capitanucci, from the Fabbrica of St. Peter’s, the office dedicated to maintaining the Basilica. Pope Urban VIII was a member of the Barberini family, Roman nobility. The three bees from the family’s crest are prominent throughout the work.
