Greek Army buys new Patroller drones from France

The Hellenic Army Aviation will receive four new Safran Patroller reconnaissance drones from France. Previously, they owned and operated the Sperwer surveillance drone, also manufactured by Safran Electronics & Defense (formerly SAGEM). The new drones will be operated by the 472nd and 473rd TEPP (Tagma Epitirisis Pliroforikis or Surveillance and Information Technology Battalion). The new fleet will be temporarily stationed at Alexandria Gidàs Airport, where the Kéntro Ekpaídefsis Aeroporías Stratoú (Army Aviation Training Center – KEAS) is located. Once operational, the four aircraft and three ground stations ordered in June 2023 will be transferred to Heraklion Air Base, Crete Air Base and Kavala Air Base. Gradually, the Patroller will replace the Sperwer in the service of the Greek Army Aviation. For your information, Greece is the first export customer of the Safran Patroller surveillance drone . The Patroller is developed based on the German-made Stemme ASP S15 motorized glider, classified as a MALE ( Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance ) drone. For its specifications, the Patroller has a length of 8.5 m and a wingspan of 18 m. As its propulsion is a single Rotax 914F turbocharged engine . The drone has a performance with a maximum speed of 314 km/h, a flight altitude of up to 7,600 m and an endurance of 30 hours in the air.
