From the vaults at the National Archives of the United States comes this silent movie film made during a mission to Bremen, Germany during World War II. The B-17s bear the Square-A tail identifier of the 94th Bomb Group, but little else is described. From the presence of camouflaged B-17G versions, we can estimate this mission took place in the summer or fall of 1944. The presence of so many exhaust contrails provided vexing fingers of vapor pointing directly to the bombers making them more visible. Sometimes, when feasible, formations would seek different altitudes in an effort to find atmospheric conditions less conducive to contrail formations. This footage shows a lot of undercast cloud cover beneath the bombers; from that it may be deduced that BTO -- bomb through overcast -- radar was employed over the target. This footage includes a classic clip of a B-17 spinning earthward, out of control as the B-17 crews fly stoically on. Occasionally twin contrails mark the paths of escorting P-38 Lightning fighters. This film is an evocatively minimalistic glimpse into the world of U.S. heavy bomber crews of that era. The film may carry the AAF identifying number 1062 or CS-1062.
