Australian Army soldiers from Darwin’s 1st Brigade are training with the Tentara Nasional Indonesia Army (TNI-AD) in Java as part of Exercise Wirra Jaya 2019 from 14 to 25 November. The annual bilateral exchange aims to foster cooperation and enhance interoperability between the neighbouring Armies with hosting duty rotated between Indonesia and Australia each year. The 2019 iteration is being conducted at Dodiklatpur in Asembagus, East Java–Indonesia’s premier live-fire field training facility that regularly hosts international exercises. The large training area will facilitate platoon-level blank and live-fire activities supported by the Australian Army Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle, which is deploying to Indonesia as part of the exercise for the first time. Led by the 5th Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment, the Australian contingent also includes 1st Combat Engineer Regiment engineers, 8th/12th Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery personnel and a section of Military Police from 1st Military Police Battalion. The Australian soldiers will train alongside a mechanised battalion from the TNI-AD’s strategic reserve force known as Kostrad.
