FoJG Sierra Club Oct. 8,2024 meeting, Nuclear Power and the Climate Crisis: Solution or Distraction?

A discussion from different points of view on what role nuclear power may play in helping us transition from fossil fuel. Dr. Supathorn Phongikaroon, Nuclear Engineering Program Director at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Bob Shippee, VA Chapter Legislative Chair, and Glen Besa, FOJG ExCom Member and Political Chair, will present. Bob Shippee leads the Legislative Committees of the VA Sierra Club, has served as Political Chair, At-large ExCom member, PAC Treasurer and Chapter Treasurer. He serves as lead volunteer lobbyist during General Assembly sessions. He has served as Vice Chair of the Henrico Electoral Board and is currently a Henrico Planning Commissioner. Bob has Bachelor's degrees from Syracuse University (Economics, Industrial Engineering) and Master's degrees from Cornell University (MBA, Industrial/Labor Relations). He worked in financial services for 28 years for a predecessor of Bank of America and for Capital One. Bob ran for county office in 2015, which led him to become active in the political arena. Bob lives in western Henrico with his wife Martha and has five adult children. Glen Besa served as director of the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter until his retirement in May 2016. In his twenty years as Sierra Club staff, he worked on a range of environmental concerns, most notably energy and climate over the last decade. Glen remains active as a Sierra Club volunteer on local issues on the Executive Committee of the Falls of the James Group such its Beyond Methane campaign and with the Virginia Chapter on energy and climate issues. He is also serves as Environmental and Climate Justice Chair of the Chesterfield County NAACP. Last year he helped found Friends of Chesterfield, an organization that is focused on defeating a proposed gas fired power plant in Chesterfield County. Glen has a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy from the University of Maryland Baltimore County and a law degree from the University of Baltimore. He has resided in Chesterfield County with his wife, Tyla Matteson since 2001. Dr. Supathorn Phongikaroon is the Nuclear Engineering Program Director at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). Under his leadership, the program has grown in research and industry partnerships, earning a U.S. News & World Report ranking of 18th in 2023/2024. Dr. Phongikaroon is also an Engineering Foundation Professor and a licensed professional engineer. His research focuses on nuclear fuel separation and safeguarding technologies. He has established labs at VCU and secured over $5.7 million in funding for more than 20 projects. Dr. Phongikaroon has taught over 25 classes and published over 50 peer-reviewed papers. He holds a Ph.D. and B.S. in Chemical Engineering and Nuclear Engineering, respectively, from the University of Maryland, College Park.
