Mark Winborn — Liber Novus and the metaphorical psyche - revisioning the Red Book

Psychosocial Wednesdays with Mark Winborn (16 September 2020) LIBER NOVUS AND THE METAPHORICAL PSYCHE - REVISIONING THE RED BOOK The publication of Jung’s Liber Novus was met with intense curiosity and excitement. It offered a window into Jung’s inner experiences and the possibility of revealing links between Jung’s theories, his personal experience, and his prophetic vision. For many readers, the publication of Liber Novus has provided these connections. Some readers assert that Jung’s Collected Works can no longer be fully understood without being framed by the contents of Liber Novus. However, around the time of publication of Liber Novus a significant re-examination of Jung’s concepts of archetypes and the collective unconscious was underway. Additionally, there has been an explosion of research on metaphor as the primary avenue by which human experience is digested and communicated. This talk uses Liber Novus as a springboard to propose a re-centering of Analytical Psychology from a psychology centered on archetypal theory to one centered on metaphoric processes in the psyche. This re-centering has useful implications for the practice of Jungian analysis, for our interactions with other psychoanalytic schools of thought, and our capacity to interact more effectively and meaningfully with the world we are engaged with. Mark Winborn, PhD, NCPsyA is a Jungian Psychoanalyst and Clinical Psychologist. Mark is a training/supervising analyst of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts and the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich, Switzerland. He currently serves on the American Board for Accreditation in Psychoanalysis and the Ethics Committee of the International Association for Analytical Psychology, as well as the editorial boards of the Journal of Analytical Psychology and the Journal of Humanistic Psychology. He has presented papers at the past four Congresses of the International Association for Analytical Psychology. His publications include Deep Blues: Human Soundscapes for the Archetypal Journey (2011), Shared Realities: Participation Mystique and Beyond (2014), and Interpretation in Jungian Analysis: Art and Technique (2018) as well as journal articles, book reviews, and chapter contributions.
