This temple is about 2000 years old which has South Indian style architecture. It is believed that Saivite Saint “Appar” adopted Saivism at this temple. This temple is one of the oldest Saivite shrines in the state of Tamil Nadu which was held in strong worship by the Saivites. People serve Lord Padaleeswarar (one of the names of Lord Shiva), who is also known as Thondra Thunai Nadhar and the Goddess who is known as Periyanayaki Amman. Devotees believe that this holy shrine provides spiritual strength to them. The inscriptions in the temple depict the history of the temple and about the Cholas, Pallavas and Pandiya dynasties who worked for the maintenance and renovation of the temple.
