In this video we catch up with 6 year old Bornean Orangutan Tombol and his family at Chester Zoo If you are a regular viewer of the channel you will know that Tombol's mom, Sarikei, has recently had another baby - a little sister for Tombol This video is the latest in a fairly long series recorded in early October 2023 when the new baby orangutan was 1 month old Sarikei is tired looking after her new baby and the baby is sleeping, contented after another satisfying feed from mom Tombol who doesn't get as much attention from mom these days (but is never pushed away by her) spends a little more time with his aunt Leia and 3 year old half sister Dot (Tombol and Dot have the same father - Willie but different mothers Sarikei and Leia) Dot and Tombol is supervised by Leia who makes sure the interaction and playtime goes smoothly, she is happy to have Tombol near and play with her daughter, but does react by taking Dot away if she feels it necessary. In fact Dot often seems to take advantage of the situation of having mom close by - being quick to run back to her if things aren't going her way! and teases Tombol, knowing he can't react back in the same way, because Leia is watching! Look out for the glances Tombol sometimes gives to Leia, just to check on her reaction and mood to him, as he play fights with Dot! Look out for the funny moment in the video at 1:36 when Tombol pushes his luck by pushing his mischievous little sister to the floor! luckily Leia saw this as acceptable rough and tumble play and didn't react. Like Sarikei she is a excellent, experienced, fair and attentive mother to her babies This video is the latest in a fairly long series of videos featuring this family of Bornean Orangutans at Chester Zoo and their new baby orangutan aged 1 month old More about the new baby at Chester Zoo The adorable 1 month old baby is 40 year old Sarikei's 4th baby and is a wonderful ray of hope to the survival of these amazing, rare critically endangered animals We have released many videos of this adorable baby girl available to watch on this channel and more videos have been recorded of the baby at different progressive stages of her development over the last 4 months and will follow this series in order of recording date as of January 2024 the time of uploading this video, the gender of the baby has been officially announced by the zoo as a girl but a name for the precious baby is yet to be announced Orangutan birth Tribute to Grandmother Martha The Critically Endangered 4 week old baby Girl Bornean Orangutan was born at Chester Zoo to devoted mother Sarikei and Father Willie and is the newest addition to the Bornean Orangutan family at the famous zoo and a wonderful legacy for her grandmother Grand Old Lady Martha who sadly passed away at the remarkable age of 59 on 16th January 2024 Chester Zoo Baby Orangutans Birth of critically endangered orangutan at Chester Zoo Chester Zoo is has a very successful record of Orangutan births at the zoo and most of the Orangutan Mothers are able to rear their own young without the assistance of zoo staff, this is largely due to the expert care and facilities the World Class Zoo provides for the animals. The current animal population have had valuable experience with babies and have observed relatives caring for young, using this learning and experience to enable them to rear their own offspring Critically Endangered Orangutans Bornean Orangutans have been considered critically endangered since 2016 with an only an estimated 100,000 left in the wild.
