Illegal Wildlife Trade and Social Media

https://www.actforwildlife.org.uk/wha... Illegal wildlife trade is the greatest direct threat to the future of many of the world’s most iconic species. With your action we can help in the fight against illegal wildlife trade. Popularity of species, such as the slow loris, on the internet is increasing the demand for the illegal trading of species. Due to the popularity of these videos on the internet, demand for slow loris hasrisen dramatically. “Social media has had a huge impact on the slow loris and it all started in 2009 when a little loris in a flat in Russia became an internet sensation when it was filmed being tickled in a bed...this video has now been seen by about 20 million people around the world…it looks quite cute but these animals are filmed in really inappropriate conditions in bright daylight, they’re illegally smuggled out of the forest.” Dr Anna Nekaris, Professor in Anthropology and Primate Conservation Be aware of videos being shared on social media of wild animals – this kind of activity on social media creates a culture where it’s ‘cute’ to see animals outside of a natural environment and it may encourage people to seek out animals that can be treated in this way. Unless images are shared by reputable organisations in the context of conservation, the images promote that these species are desirable as pets. Please also be aware of the conditions that the animals are being kept in and research whether the keepers of those animals are qualified and accredited in keeping animals. Anyone making money from animals should be able to prove that the welfare of those animals is of a good standard. It’s fine to take photos of wild animals while you are abroad as long as the welfare of that animal isn’t being compromised, (eg. drugging or restraining the animal for the purposes of photo opportunities). If you do see videos like this on social media, don’t like or share, share videos that help raise awareness of the plight of these species instead.
