The composer discusses how his early experiments with tape loops and phasing fed the development of his later works. With influences encompassing Stravinsky, jazz, African drumming and gamelan, Steve Reich's music has reached out to audiences way beyond traditional classical music circles. Works such as Drumming, Music for 18 Musicians and Different Trains are among the most important of the past 50 years, continuing to be highly influential on younger musicians and composers. His musical philosophy has helped to break through artistic boundaries, with notable examples in the fields of dance and video theatre. This film is presented by Boosey & Hawkes and directed by Tommy Pearson of Red Ted Films.
