The Impact Crater Near Washington D.C.; The Chesapeake Bay Crater

One of the largest impact craters on the planet is located not too far from Washington D.C. Known as the Chesapeake Bay Crater, this ancient impact crater was partially responsible for the creation of the modern bay and associated peninsula. It originated a mere 35.5 million years ago when a massive asteroid collided with the planet at a high speed. This video will discuss this impact crater and the scope of the associated devastation its formation brought. Estimates on asteroid diameter, velocity, tnt energy equivalent, frequency of a similar magnitude asteroid/comet impact event, and effects from the impact (including earthquake magnitude generated and wind speeds generated) in this video were sourced using the calculator at https://impact.ese.ic.ac.uk/ImpactEar..., which was used with permission.
