In today’s episode of Daily Racer we meet Fred Giffels III and his 1978 Pontiac Trans Am hardtop in Martinique Blue. What’s special about this 78 Bandit is that it used to be a hillclimb race car racing at Chimney Rock HillClimb in the 90s which Fred attended as a kid with his father. So Fred definitely watched his car race years before buying it, which he only realized from filming with Daily Racer for this feature! We get a little history of the Trans Am today learning that the name comes from the Trans American Challenge and was licensed by the SCCA [ Sports Car Club of America ]. The downside, Pontiac never made a Trans Am with a small enough engine to race in the Trans American Challenge leaving GM to their Chevrolet Camaro Counterpart to take over the race series. Follow Daily Racer on social media | @dailyracermedia / dailyracermedia / dailyracermedia / dailyracermedia http://www.dailyracermedia.com Classic Pontiac Rescue social media / classicpontiacrescue / coorsbandit http://www.classicpontiacrescue.com Fred’s dad had a 77 Bandit when he was growing up which kickstarted Fred’s love of classic Trans Ams. Smokey and the Bandit finished it off. So when Fred grew up, started his career, and made a little money, it was clear a 78 Bandit was in his future. There are only a few original parts left from when Fred bought his 78 Trans Am, but that’s mostly because the owners before Fred raced it as well. It still has a Trans Am Pontiac engine in it though, so it still has the heart of classic American muscle cars. Fred tried to go for an old school look with his Panasport Wheels look-a-likes. It has a 1970 trans am engine block with 1968 Pontiac GTO No.16 Heads. It was, although no longer, a WS6 Option and a W78 Option car. We also get a sneak peak behind the scenes in the shop of Classic Pontiac Rescue where Joe Jackson and the team specialize in Firebirds, Pontiac GTOs, Trans Ams, and pretty much anything General Motors. Joe and Fred walk us through another beautiful 78 Pontiac Trans Am hardtop in Martinique Blue, which only came on the 78 Trans Ams. Also, the hardtop is pretty rare too as we are used to seeing this GM classic in a T-Top! Despite not having the fire chicken on the hood and a T-Top we hope you still show some love for what Fred has done to this beautiful martinique blue 1978 Trans Am. Tune in for some awesome 1978 Trans Am burnout action. Be sure to Like & Subscribe to Daily Racer Media so you don’t miss a feature! Want to have your car featured on Daily Racer?
