Many people don't know how to use commas with the word "AND" and have different opinions on whether or not commas are necessary. There are two situations where we need to use commas before the coordinating conjunction "and." 1) We use a comma to split the items in a list of three or more. The Oxford comma is the final comma in a list of things. It is also known as the serial comma. Examples: • Mom told me to do my homework, make my bed, and wash the dishes. • I need to buy cheese, bread, and ham for dinner. 2) We use a comma before the coordinating conjunction “and” when it connects two independent clauses. Examples: • The teacher prepared an interesting lesson, and the students loved it. • Joey wants to be a firefighter, and Kerry wants to be a musician.
