Modern Family Home and Studio in Highgate Conservation Area | Sustainable Design by Russell Jones

In this video, we explore a recently completed family home and studio designed by Russell Jones, located in the Miltons, part of the Highgate Conservation Area in London. Situated on a 200m² site, the house was built on the former location of an old garage, accessible via a narrow passageway, and surrounded by Edwardian buildings. Despite being in a conservation area, the design reflects the informal backland nature of its location. The home is carefully organized over four slightly separated levels, following the natural slope of the site, with interconnected indoor and outdoor spaces. Each room is positioned along a 20-meter axis, creating a sense of fluidity throughout the home, from the front door to the walled rear garden. With materials selected to accommodate the limited access to the site, the house features a timber frame construction, brickwork near the boundaries, and sustainable Siberian Larch cladding. Inside, Douglas fir boards line the walls, floors, and ceilings, maintaining a cohesive aesthetic. Custom-made furniture from the same timber enhances the home’s natural and warm atmosphere. The house also incorporates several sustainable design elements, including an air source heat pump, underfloor heating, LED lighting, and water collection for garden use. The result is a functional, comfortable, and environmentally friendly home that blends modern living with the character of its conservation area surroundings. Join us as we take a closer look at this innovative home that successfully combines practicality, sustainability, and beauty. Architects: Russell Jones | https://www.archdaily.com/office/russ...
