Typing outside on a 1960 Olympia SM-4 typewriter

I now present to your the silky smooth 1960 Olympia SM-4 typewriter (I actually don't know if the Germans themselves officially included a dash). This was the 14th typewriter added to my collection. I forget what drew me to search for an Olympia SM-3 or SM-4 first as opposed to a Torpedo 18 or Hermes 3000. I preferred the SM-4 for its keyset tabulator and the associated controls being on the flanks of the spacebar. I also like this machine's green as opposed to black spacebar and tab set/clear which match the tabulator keys on my Olympia SG-1. It was listed as having been in great condition and barely used. The seller did a great packing job, whereby it typed wonderfully straight out of the case. A few folks on the Typewriters Discord were surprised when I described it action as feeling exquisitely light, probably my lightest feeling typewriter, later on likewise bring surprised that I found that my Torpedo 18B felt really heavy, so much so that I would sometimes type on it just to make the Olympia SM-4 afterward feel that much more heavenly. I recently finally tuned up my Torpedo 18B to feel and operate "as it should" or "in accordance with hype", but that's for another video. This is the last of five typewriter videos recorded outside during a day when I had to supervise my two poodles who had to stay outside due to the air duct cleaning technician being in the house; this one and the following was taken later in the after noon after the duct cleaner had already left. This was a month and some, whereby I didn't have a chance to edit these videos due to my being on a trip and having to work on a few new arrivals. 0:00 Introduction 0:13 Carriage lock and carriage release operation 0:29 Margins 0:32 Paper release 0:43 Line finder 0:51 Line spacing selector 1:14 Feeding paper 1:27 Paper stand/scale 1:36 Don't forget the bubble tea feature. 2:12 Tabulator 2:30 All tabs clear 2:46 First keypresses. A higher pitched sound than most of my typewriters. I find that the Olympia actions sound especially rattly. For a time after I had taken Liquid Wrench to my SM-4, it amplified the rattliness as though whatever gunk that originally remained had been removed and could no longer dampen the high-pitched rattling of the action; I could also feel it in the keypresses; this eventually diminished and returned to the machine's preceding glory, but now with Cerflon dry lubricant. Liquid Wrench made my SG-1 a bit quieter and indeed smoother feeling. 3:13 Typing feel. Exquisitely light, silky smooth. You barely feel any springy resistance, just the weight and inertia of the action, whereby the escapement and ribbon advance are actuated fairly late during the keystroke. The ribbon vibrator unlike on a most typewriters I have experienced didn't contribute any roughness, just added weight to the action. Comparison to the Torpedo 18B. If the Adler Favorit 2 is like "the smoothest chocolate ganache", this machine is a chocolate fondue. 5:18 **TYPING DEMO** 6:25 Bubble tea blurb. A shoutout to TwoSetViolin for instigating my upgrade from taro to OG milk tea. 7:15 Typing resumes 9:05 10-fingered master race 9:49 Typing resumes 10:26 Upper right view 13:42 Right view 14:24 On some machines, the feel becomes lighter right after the automatic ribbon reverse since the spool that was just emptied is now pulling with a smaller moment arm than the filled spool; that is where this Olympia SM-4 starts to feel absolutely heavenly. 15:37 Torpedo 18B versus Olympia SM-4 force curve. My definition of "snappiness" in a typewriter. The feel of a typewriter, keyboard, or any "key/button", can be described in terms of force with respect to the displacement of the key/button; this curve may change dynamically depending on how fast or hard you press the key/button due to the inertia of the mechanism. 18:06 Closeup 19:32 Conclusion What you can expect to see on this channel: - Soon: Typewriter, switch, and keyboard collecting, Romantic Era piano performances (Chopin, Liszt, Schumann, Alkan etc.), "perfectionist" Lego builds and mods. - Within a year: Programming, computer architecture, model ship building, worldbuilding?, conlangs?, philosophy? - In the following years: Independent watchmaking, making a unique typewriters from scratch, "revolutionizing" the concert grand.
