The Trans Europ Express was an international trainnet between 1957 and 1988. It connectet more than 100 cities in western Europe on 17500 kilometer railway. The trains were first class only and had speeds between 160 and 200 km/h. The Trans Europ Express was an early symbol of a modern Europe with open borders. The travelers were often business people, high officials, politicians and diplomats. When flights became more common, these travelers switched and that concept of an international first class train began to vanish by the end of the 1970s already. Due to an estimated output of 28 million tonnes of CO2 by Intra-European flights every year, the Trans Europ express could get its revival in the near future.
