This physics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into the speed of sound in solids, liquids, and gases. It contains plenty of examples and practice problems. In a solid, the speed of sound depends on the density of the material and young's modulus - also known as the elastic modulus. In a liquid, the speed of sound depends on the density of the fluid and the bulk modulus. In a gas, the speed of the sound depends on gamma - the ratio of heat capacities, the temperature, and the molar mass of a gas. As the temperature increases, the speed of sound in air increases. The speed of a solid is higher than the speed of sound in a liquid which in turn is higher than the speed of sound in a gas. All of the equations and formulas that you need are provided.
