Dr Sidney Alford demonstrates two of Alford Technology's products, a "Vulcan" and a "Pluton" shaped charge device, used for destroying unexploded ordnance without detonating them. The Vulcan uses a small 40g shaped plastic explosive charge, with a thin cone of water encased by a plastic shaper. When the charge detonates the shock wave formed by the conical shape forces the water into an incredibly fast moving dart that can penetrate the steel casing of an unexploded bomb, as demonstrated here with a steel plate. This causes a huge pressure increase inside the weapon, forcing the detonator to "pop out" without detonating, rendering the weapon safe. The larger Pluton device uses the same principle but instead a 1lb (450g) charge fires a thin magnesium cone at high velocity into the target, which burns brightly as it travels. Again it can penetrate thick steel casing and causes the deflagration of the contained explosive without it's detonation. Many thanks to Sidney Alford for the demonstrations at the UK Pyrotechnics Society AGM, May 2012. http://www.pyrosociety.org.uk http://www.explosives.net
