Powering our future with AI and STEAM | Gry Stene | TEDxUWA

As AI, bots and other technologies infiltrate our lives and become a prominent part of decisions and the way we do things, many of us wonder if we have jumped on a runaway train where we have no control. In this talk, Gry shares her optimism and vision for a future that is underpinned by diversity and a real connection between people and technology. She makes the case for bringing skills from the Arts and Humanities into the STEM landscape to create STEAM to power our future, because we need not only technical expertise, but compassion, critical thinking, creativity, languages, focus on quality, subject matter expertise and a collaborative mindset to ensure that we have the diversity that is required to create humane and meaningful technologies.   Gry Stene is a tech entrepreneur, STEAM advocate and a ‘geek whisperer’. She is fascinated by people and human-centred design and brings all of that together to solve real-world problems through a diverse and inclusive approach. As a software engineer, Gry is keenly aware that the industry only has 25% of women in key roles. And that is only one aspect of the lack of diversity in the industry. Optimistic about the potential of technology to positively impact our lives, Gry is a role model for women and other underrepresented groups in the technology landscape. Gry strongly makes the case for bringing an A into the STEM agenda to create STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics). She believes that STEAM makes room for technical expertise, creativity, design, languages and compassion to coexist beautifully as one. She firmly believes that STEAM needs to be at the very core of education, business and our future. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
