Nick Van Nocker of Mercury Marine on Marine Technician Industry | MMI Marine

Nick Van Nocker is the Training Technology Manager for Mercury University, which is the training department at Mercury Marine. Mercury Marine is a manufacturer of outboard motors and inboard engines, with more than 4,000 dealers in the United States. Nick talks about the impact of COVID-19 on his business and the marine industry, which quickly ramped back up in production because of the demand for boating and outdoor recreation amid coronavirus travel restrictions. As more people have become interested in boating as a way to have fun during the pandemic, that also increases the demand for skilled technicians to maintain those products. Nick says there has always been a demand for marine technicians as master technicians retire, and there will continue to be now and in the future. Nick talks about what marine technicians can expect in the industry, which is evolving quickly with new technology developments. Nick mentions how today there’s a mobile app to check how an engine is operating, as well as joystick docking. Nick provides advice to aspiring marine technicians. He says mechanical skills are essential, but so are soft skills like good communication, great customer service and a willingness to learn and ask questions. He says Mercury Marine looks for an excellent work ethic when hiring, as well as a drive to succeed and be the best in your craft. Nick says getting experience is also helpful for career-seekers. He tells aspiring technicians and soon-to-be graduates to take any opportunity available to work for a dealership. A foot in the door can lead to working up to getting master certified. Nick mentions the technicians who work for Mercury Marine constantly keep up with training as technology changes. The online blended learning model at Marine Mechanics Institute (MMI) prepares students to work with technology and to continue learning online throughout their careers. Nick also mentions Mercury Marine recruits from MMI because students gain experience in a real-world lab with hands-on activities.
