IAM Roadsmart Advanced Rider test Sept' 2021

This video is a complete run through my advanced rider test route. I try to give advice for anybody who is preparing to take their test and give an insight into what is expected for anyone who is thinking of taking the course. I started the training with the South Cheshire Advanced Motorcylists group on July 4th 2021, in preparation for my application to become a Blood Biker, as an advanced motorcycling certification is a minimum requirement. The cost for the complete course, including the test fee, was £149.00. This fee includes associate membership of the IAM (a sort of probationary member) upgraded to full membership on completion of a succesful test, the course itself and all of the documentation and course log book. The whole course comprised a total of 6 sessions, spaced approximately 2 or 3 weeks apart from each other, and consisted of several modules that include; Core riding skills Junctions and roundabouts Bends Overtaking Motorways and dual-carriageways Mock riding test Actual test. Before each session, you are assigned an observer who then discusses your previous session (apart from the initial session) and talks about what you will be covering that day. During the session, you may stop a number of times to discuss your current ride and to identify any potential issues that you can then work on for the rest of the session. At the end, there is a final debrief and an assessment of the days ride which is recorded in your course logbook. Competence levels are graded as 1, 2 or 3. 1 = Commended 2 = Satisfactory 3 = Requires development As with any training, it is then up to you to go out and practice everything you have learned to put into practice in your everyday riding and ready for your next session. Once you feel you are ready for your test (in your own time) you can then ask for a 'mock' test and if the assessment of the ride is that you are ready, you can then apply for your advanced rider test. Some people don't actually want to take their test at the end of the course and are happy with just the learning experience and the knowledge they take away from the course. This is, of course, the riders own personal decision and no-one is forced into taking the test. However, if you DO choose to apply for the test, the tester will contact you and arrange a time that is mutually convenient and let you know where to meet to commence the test. I would recommend that you go out for a ride immediately before your test. This will allow you to asses the general road conditions and also get you in the correct mindset before you start. As with any test/exam, there are 2 results: Pass or fail. However, as with many other tests and examinations lot of pass results can have different grades (pass/merit/distinction or bronze/silver/gold) and the same applies to the IAM advanced rider test. If you pass and attain a 1 for ALL competences, you can gain a F1rst. Examiners have the discretion to recommend a candidate for a F1rst even if they score a '2' in no more than three categories (however Legality and Slow Manoeuvering must score a '1'). Unfortunately, some people do fail the test. There can be any number of reasons that this can happen and isn't just down to the fact that they are a bad rider. They were clearly competent enough or they wouldn't have been advised to apply for their test in the first instance. So, if you do fail, you can easily book a re-test (highly recommended to re-book as soon as possible while all of the knowledge is still fresh in your head). The cost for the re-test is £39.00 As per the video title, I took my advanced rider test on the 24th September 2021 gaining a F1rst.
