Things to Do in Cumming GA

#CummingsGeorgia #CummingGARealEstate #ForsythCountyGARealEstate Considering a move to Forsyth County? My husband Rick and I moved to Cumming in 2001 after living in Michigan for more than 10 years. Our sleepy little town of St. Joseph was located on the shores of Lake Michigan. The white-sand beaches and beautiful sunsets made it a popular weekend getaway destination for Chicagoans. Yes, it was beautiful, but the weather could be a bit challenging. It wasn’t unheard of to occasionally need a sweater on the beach in the summer. Don’t get me started on the winters! While I loved living there, I am a warm weather girl by nature. For me, the last straw was a particularly bad December. Gray skies and lake effect snow are the norm, but boy did we get a bunch of it that year. In fact, we got about 65 inches in just over a month! That was it for us. We started listening to recruiters and decided we’d go with whoever got the first job in the south! About two weeks later, Rick received a call about a promising job. Best of all, we could live anywhere as long as it was near a major airport. We discussed several possibilities, eventually settling on Atlanta. Rick had lived there previously and loved it. We also knew Atlanta would be more diverse than where we were coming from and that appealed to us. We researched schools and decided on the suburbs. I love going into the city and pretending that I could be a city girl, but I’m really not. I’m still a small-town girl at heart. First, we looked in Alpharetta. We loved it but then we went a little further north up GA 400. That’s where we found Cumming. We were drawn to newer homes, less traffic, and good schools. And the lake! Cumming is home to Lake Lanier, a beautiful inland lake that spans 38,000 acres. It’s not Lake Michigan but, it is so pretty with its tree-lined shores. If you love to get outdoors, the lake is just one choice Cumming has to offer. There is also a great park system that includes Fowler and Central Parks. Then there is the greenway that spans much of the county. You’ll see tons of people out walking, running, or biking. If hiking is your passion, visit Indian Seats at the top of Sawnee Mountain. The views go on forever! More challenging hikes in the foothills of the Appalachians are just a short car ride north. The outdoor lifestyle sold me, now we had to find a home. We narrowed our home search to subdivisions offering pools and tennis courts. We figured those amenities would allow our six kids to make friends. They did and so did we! I learned to play tennis and we love just hanging out with neighbors. We found the Atlanta area to be very welcoming and amazing place to raise a family. You’ll find many communities have amenities like pools, tennis courts, playgrounds, clubhouses, and even golf courses. There are a lot of other options, though, including townhomes, large homes on acreage, even farms! If you love horses, equestrian properties are plentiful in the county. There really is something for everyone in Cumming. That probably explains its incredible growth over the last 20 years. When we moved here there were about 100,000 residents. Now there are more than 250,000. Once, it wasn’t uncommon to find just a gas station and maybe a local restaurant as you exited GA 400. Now there are outdoor shopping malls, office parks, multiple gas stations, groceries, and restaurants. The downtown area is getting a new city center that will be hub for community activity. New schools are popping up yearly. There were three high schools when I moved here. There will be nine with the opening of East Forsyth High this year. They offer a wide array of extra-curricular activities, trade programs, AP courses, IB programs, and online learning. We even have one dedicated to those pursuing careers in things like cyber security, law enforcement, or even the arts. With all this growth comes more traffic, which is something to keep in mind if you’re going to be commuting into the city. But, if you’ll be working in another suburb, GA 400 also connects Cumming to our neighbors just south like Roswell, Alpharetta, and the Perimeter business district. The upside to a little longer commute is Forsyth County’s property taxes, which are the lowest in the metro Atlanta area. There is also a school tax exemption for those over 65. The county’s infrastructure is smaller and easier to maneuver than some of our larger neighbors. There is much to love about Cumming. I know we’ve been very happy here. If you’re considering a move to our area, we’d love to help you get acquainted with our beautiful county and surrounding area.
