In this video, I take you with me on a visit to St Giles church in Holme, near Newark in Nottinghamshire. A church untouched by the Victorians, it was built in the 1480s and 1490s by John Barton, a wool merchant. It contains Barton's extraordinary monument and other evidence of his patronage, which provides a vivid insight into the secular and spiritual interests of a late medieval self-made man. If you want to know more about this church you might like my article on this building ‘The sheep hath paid for all’ - church building and self-expression in the Late Middle Ages' in the following volume. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Churches-Too...
