New York Knicks @ Utah Stars 28 September 1971 NBA/ABA Pre-Season

Footage from New York Knicks 96-89 win over the Utah Stars before 12,201 fans at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City on September 28, 1971 As the result of an agreement between the National Basketball Association and the upstart American Basketball Association to discuss a merger, NBA and ABA teams began facing each other in pre-season exhibitions. This game was somewhat unique, in that each team was just a year away from having played in its respective league’s finals: the Knicks were 1970 NBA champs, while the Stars lost the 1970 ABA title (while still in Los Angeles) to the Indiana Pacers The Knicks had not repeated as champions, so some changes were made. New York’s major upgrade was the edition of all-star Jerry Lucas to a team that could already count Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, and Dave DeBusschre on its roster—all four would ultimately be named to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary team in 2021. The Knicks also had Bill Bradley, Phil Jackson, and Dick Barnett; Barnett coached the team that evening while Knicks coach Red Holtzman observed the Jewish holidays The Stars moved to Utah after losing in the finals, and also added Zelmo Beaty to their mix; the Stars won the ABA title in 1971 Given the rivalry between the two leagues, Utah—in particular—treated the game like a world championship. Utah’s rookie coach Ladell Andersen had his team up by 12 just before the half, and then decided to rest his starters. New York then grabbed the momentum and never gave it back. Coach-for-a-Night Barnett, for his part, played Frazier, Reed, and DeBusschre most of the game, saying it was because “they [Stars] wanted to win it” The NBA did not have a 3-point line at the time; ironically, DeBusschre made the only 3 of the game, and it was the only one his team took. Utah went 0-for-7 from beyond the src Beaty had 25 points and 23 boards for Utah in 41 minutes; Willie Wise added 20 points and 16 rebounds in 45 minutes. New York was paced by Frazier and Barnett, each with 19 points Footage courtesy of our friends at Flagstaff Films, who originally shared the footage via three tweets on Twitter This also marks the debut of our new theme song, written and performed by Steve Holroyd (©️2022 Dweller Hollow Music.
