5 Tips to Speak Korean like a Native

Throughout my Korean studies, I have repeatedly noticed certain parts of Korean which the textbooks teach in an unnatural way. This is an attempt to create direct parallels between Korean and English, but it results in foreigners speaking Korean in a very different way to how natives speak. In this video, I go through 5 things that Korean textbooks tend to teach unnaturally, and how native speakers actually speak. I made a list of Konglish words that are often more common than their native Korean counterparts. Please note that the Korean words are still commonly used, but the English word has become very widespread. In some cases, the Korean and English word have slightly different shades of meaning. size: 크기 → 사이즈 massage: 안마 → 마사지 go shopping: 물건을 사다 → 쇼핑하다 gym: 체육관 → 헬스장 wife: 아내 → 와이프 shop: 가게 → 마트 cup: 잔 → 컵 box: 상자 → 박스 boxing: 권투 → 복싱 table: 탁자 →테이블 Christmas: 성탄절 → 크리스마스 event: 행사 → 이벤트 sale: 할인 → 세일 signature: 성명 → 싸인 demonstration/protest: 시위 → 데모 condition: 상태 → 컨디션 report: 보고서 → 레포트 dessert: 후식 → 디저트 team: 단체 → 팀 wine: 포도주 → 와인 group: 집단 → 그룹 to control: 조정하다 → 콘트롤하다 ticket: 표 → 티켓 page: 장 → 페이지 hole (in a tire): 구멍 → 펑크* game: 놀이 → 게임 to open (a business): 열다 → 오픈하다 position: 위치 → 포지션 (this is true of many words in professional settings)
