Eye Opening Clean Up At Hampta Pass - We Cleaned 901 kg In 2 Days | Indiahikes | Green Trails

Hampta Pass is one of the most popular treks in our country. Every year about 10 000 trekkers step on it. But Hampta Pass has been severely suffering with the problem that no one talks about. The problem of litter. Last year we cleaned up around 500 kilos of waste from the trail. This time, with bad weather we thought the trash would be much lower but things turned out otherwise. On 26th August, our team at Manali set out on a two-day mission to attack the entire Hampta Pass trail. We wanted to clean up each and every corner of the trek The 30 members divided themselves into two teams. One team would start from Jobra and one would go from Chatru side. Each team carried about 50 odd sacks, some gloves and masks with them. They did not find much trash on the trail but what they saw off the trail was very disturbing. They found trash hidden between rocks. There were glass bottles all around, paper cups, plastic bottles, soil wet wipes, maggot infested clothes and discarded equipment lying under a load of debris. Over just two days of cleaning, the team collected 900 kilos of trash. Yes, 20 kilometers of Trail, 901 kilos of trash which is close to a ton. While our team was in high in spirits, as they were cleaning the trail, there was an unspoken sadness to see the recklessness of people. We know and believe there is a greener way of trekking and all it takes is an extra step on every trekker's part to be mindful of what they are bringing into the mountains and ensure they leave the mountains better than they find them No amount of appreciation is enough for the 30-member team that rolled up their sleeves and did the hard work. This is a small story of hope that when the right intentions meet consistent action good things can happen.
