The Novi Avion was Yugoslavia's ambitious attempt to create a fourth-generation multi-role combat aircraft in the 1980s. Designed by SOKO with technical assistance from France, this fighter bore a striking resemblance to the French Dassault Rafale. The Novi Avion was intended to modernize Yugoslavia's air force, replacing aging MiG-21s and J-21 Jastreb aircraft, while reducing reliance on foreign suppliers. Featuring advanced avionics, a lightweight composite airframe, and cutting-edge technology, the Novi Avion was set to compete with contemporary fighters like the Rafale and F-16. With a top speed of Mach 1.88, a projected range of over 2,300 miles, and versatile armament options, it was designed to handle air superiority, ground attack, and anti-ship operations. Unfortunately, the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s halted the project before the aircraft could take flight, ending the dream of an indigenous Yugoslav fighter jet.
