Asahidake is probably one of the most misunderstood ski destinations in Hokkaido. In recent years it's popularity has exploded. One of the reasons is the quality of the snow that you will often ski here and the regular snowfalls during the winter season. It is the only real lift served skiing in the Daisetsuzan National Park, discounting Kurodake with the short 150 vertical lift at the top of the ropeway. And while 500 vertical meters vertical and staggered short pitches aren't anything to write home about in terms of terrain, you may have an incredible ski day due to the snow. Deep days can be very deep, so it's best to come prepared with skis with a healthy width underfoot. Or a snowboard with decent length to get over the flat spots. There's a reason you see locals with giant snowboards here and poles to boot. Clear days also combine fantastic views of the volcano and it's many billowing vents. It is a live volcano, but fairly dormant on the volcanic active scale. Chuck is the director of Hokkaido Powder Guides.
