In our first podcast series, ***Our Heroes, Our Martyrs***, we honor the patriots of our community and their families who sacrificed their lives in defense of dharma. Today, we have the privilege of speaking with Sh. Shadi Lal Raina of Salia, Anantnag. Starting with a small investment of Rs. 4500 in a Wool Yarn Retail and Ready-Made Garments Shop(Woolways) - Shadi Lal ji grew his little entrepreneurial venture to 4 different businesses running in Anantnag (Chini Chowk) - such as Rental Steel Utensils for Weddings (SteelWays), Saree Shop (Shaneela Palace) and wholesale Medical Supply (Asco Traders Pharmaceutical Distributors) which he ran successfully until Dec 1989 - when his paternal aunt’s husband Amar Shaheed Pt. Prem Nath Bhat (Advocate) was mercilessly assassinated behind his shop, while Shadi Lal Ji bore witness to this atrocity. Mr. Bhat was shot in the face - impaling him immediately and killing him on the way to the hospital. Shadi Lal Ji bravely picked up limp body of his uncle and carried it to the hospital in a rickshaw hoping to save his life. This experience not only put him a target on his back, leading to a bomb blast attack at his residence (destroying a portion of his house), but also led to terrorist sympathizers announce “fatwa” against him to be executed within 24 hours. This is what led him to leave Kashmir overnight leaving behind his businesses.
