What is the best rep range to build muscle after 50? I get asked questions like this all the time. In today’s video I’ll explain what rep ranges I would aim for, but I’ll also share something more important than rep ranges for building muscle. The first thing to keep in mind is your muscles themselves don’t have an ideal rep range. They understand tension and intensity. So more important than a specific rep range is the intensity of your sets. It’s less about counting your reps and more about making your reps count. If you grab a weight that you can only do 5 reps with, and then you do those 5 reps - that’s ideal, if you’ve actually reached muscle failure. However, most men over 50 don’t push themselves that way. It’s more about checking off the prescribed amount of repetitions, even if there isn’t a lot of intensity in the set. So, is there a “best” rep range? I wouldn’t say there’s a best rep range, but there are rep ranges that, as we get older, might do more harm than good. For safety reasons, I don’t recommend 1-3 rep maxes unless you have a good spotter and you take recovery and mobility seriously. I don’t recommend 15-20 rep sets because of the wear and tear the movements can have on your joints. I’ve personally found between 8-12 reps has been my sweet spot since turning 50 - with the goal being more so to make the reps count more than anything.
