The University was established in 1998 by an Act of Andhra Pradesh State Legislature. It is popularly known as NALSAR or NALSAR Hyderabad and is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is accredited with an “A” grade with a score of 3.60 by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). In 2020, the University was ranked 3rd for Law as per the NIRF ranking framework, apart from this, it was also ranked 2nd for Law by The Week in 2019. NALSAR was also ranked 3rd by CLAT cut-off 2019 among 23 NLUs in India. Apart from this, the University has undertaken collaborative research with the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Centre for Children Law & Ethics, Cumberland School, Samford University, Centre for Disability Law & Policy, University of Ireland and more. The University runs a student and faculty exchange programme in collaboration with several foreign universities, including The University of New South Wales, Australia, Kings College London, UK, University of Warwick, UK, Santa Clara University, USA and more.
